Hammerheads leave the Bronx Victorious

SU Men’s Rugby got off to the start they were looking for this past weekend. Traveling down to the Bronx, SURFC were looking for their first ERC win against Fordham, a feisty opponent who refused to give up. Fullback Ethan Palleschi (’17) ran a great strike line and dotted down from 45 meters out just minutes into the match, which set the tone for the Hammerheads. A beautiful second try after multiple forward offloads by lock Sam Reimnitz (’17) after a Fordham penalty brought the score to 14-3 in favor of SU. Going into half, SURFC knew what they needed to do- execute. Following a Fordham try, the Hammerheads came together and needed to step up with the realization that this game could slip out of their grasp. Captain Angus Bishop (’17) said, “During the preseason, a large emphasis was put on building character and this week revealed that this team has great character and poise.” The team clearly responded, and tries from David Fathers (’19), Alex Amico (’17), and Palleschi again within a span of minutes shut the gate on any possible comeback for Fordham. Seth Gilgus (’16) added a try with 10 minutes left and a Fordham try on the final play put an end to a great league opener for SURFC.
Next week the Hammerheads travel to Western New York to face upstate foe Brockport who is coming off a 36-10 loss to Colgate. Follow us on Instagram and Twitter (@Cuse_rugby) for in game updates
