Hammerheads Don't Look Back After Early Brockport Score. B Side Wins a Thriller

The Hammerheads traveled to Western New York yesterday to face SUNY Brockport and left with a 74-10 victory. For 7 minutes the score was deadlocked at 0-0. The Brockport Doggies scored a try from the goal line to make it 5-0, from there on out the Hammerheads never looked back. Sophomore Eddie McCarthy was the first to get the Hammerheads on the board in the 12th minute to make it 7-5 after a successful conversion by Senior Alex Hodgkinson. Immediately after that on the kickoff Sophomore Jake Smith scored a 50 meter try. Additional tries in the first came from Hodgkinson, Senior Matt Hoalcraft and Junior Ethan Palleschi. SURFC entered halftime with a 34-5 lead.
In the 44th minute Brockport scored their final try of the day to make it 34-10. Second half tries came from Hodgkinson (2), Sophomore Matt Magargee, Senior Seth Gilgus, Freshman Andrew Burdsall, and Junior Jay Carmody. Hodgkinson had 33 points and was 8/11 on conversions and 1/1 on penalty conversions.
The SURFC B-side had an absolute thriller of a game. The Hammerheads took an early 17-0 lead with tries coming from Junior Pat Voorheis, and Freshman Karim Yamout, went into halftime with a lead of 30-7. In the second half, Yamout was awarded a penalty try, and Senior Matt Canzler scored on a brilliant 40 meter run. Brockport came storming back and in the 60th minute scored a try to narrow the gap to 30-24. Sophomore Eric Fray had a goal line try to make it 35-24, but in the 81stminute the Doggies took the lead at 38-35. Finally, after a series of mauls, forward play and penalty taps, Sophomore TJ Attanasio notched the game-winning try to bring the final score to 40-38.
Forwards Coach David DeSalvia on the win "The final score was a bit of a surprise to me. The physicality and intensity of the match made it feel closer. Brockport always feels an athletic team and this year is no exception. I think we were fortunate to play them early in the season, As they get more experience and sharpen their skills they will be a difficult opponent. "
The Hammerheads left Brockport outscoring the Doggies 114-48 on the day. SURFC takes on Empire Rugby Conference foe Stony Brook next Saturday. #HHAFD
