Hammerheads Fall Short to Seawolves

The Hammerheads got off to a fast start on Saturday, but couldn’t pull away as they lost to Stony Brook, 33-26 in a brutal match.

The match started off with a goal line try by Junior captain Angus Bishop, followed quickly by a score from Senior Flyhalf Alex Hodgkinson. Both conversions were successful. Unfortunately, strong running from Stony Brook led to several tries, and a halftime score of 19-14. In the second half, Stony Brook scored another try to go up 26-14, but Sophomore Flanker Jake Smith burst through the line for a try to pull the Hammerheads within 5. Stony Brook responded with another score to go up 33-21. Bishop again had a huge moment on the Stony Brook goal line, blocking a kick and touching the ball down for a score to give the Hammerheads new life. Unfortunately, a tremendous goal line stand by Stony Brook denied the Hammerheads the tying try, and the final score stood at 33-26, Seawolves.

In the B side match, the two teams battled back and forth in a low-scoring affair, but Stony Brook eventually pulled away to win 13-5. Eric Fray scored the Hammerheads’ lone try.

Syracuse has a bye week next weekend, and resumes play with an away match at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on October 10th.
