Hammerheads Defeat Doggies

Syracuse defeated Brockport with the effort of a solid start that gave the Hammerheads a 13-0 lead for the first 30 minutes of the match.The Hammerheads were carried by the play of Junior lock Jack Faure who had 13 points throughout the game. Faure was 2/4 on conversions and was a perfect 3/3 on penalty conversions.
The Hammerheads scored in the 5th minute on a 22 meter penalty conversion. Soon after, freshman inside center Eddie McCarthy had his first try of his college career from an offload from senior flyhalf Raf Stitt. Faure hit the kick to make it 10-0 within 15 minutes of play. In the 20th minute Faure slotted a penalty conversion from 25 meters to make it 13-0.
Brockport got on the board in the 30th minute with a score from their wing off a lineout and the conversion was successful to lessen the deficit to 5. The most exciting play of the half came from Faure when he hit a 20 meter kick all the way from the left sideline as the whistle for the end of the half sounded to put the Hammerheads up 16-7.
The Doggies kicked off the 2nd half with a quick score but missed the conversion. In the 52nd minute junior wing Seth Gilgus scored off a 35 meter run. Brockport countered quickly with a score of their own to put the score at 21-17 with 20 minutes to play.
Raf Stitt put the nail in the coffin in the 68th minute when he intercepted a pass and took it 35 meters for the score. Faure hit the conversion to put the score at 28-17. Senior hooker Vince Morales had his first score of the year when he scored in the 72nd minute with Faure narrowly missing the conversion.
The Hammerheads had a very good game on scrums and lineouts as well. Forwards coach David DeSalvia said after the game “This was the best performance in the scrums we have had all year.”
The Hammerheads take on Binghamton on October 18th for a battle for third place in the Empire Rugby conference.
