Hammerheads finish the season vs Colgate

On Saturday, Syracuse traveled to Hamilton, NY to face Central New York foe Colgate University for the last match of the season. Both teams went into the math with a 2-3 record and were looking to end the season on a high note.

 

Syracuse started the scoring early on offense when in the 2nd minute Jack Faure hit a penalty conversion. Colgate bounced back in the 13th minute with a try of their own to make it 7-3. In the 18th minute senior Vince Morales had his first score of the day with a try off a maul. In the 25th and 30th minute Colgate scored on penalty conversions to make it a 13-8 game. Right after the 2nd penalty conversion Brad Orr scored off a maul to tie the contest up at 13.

 

The play of the game came was a collective effort from sophomore captain Angus Bishop, senior Raf Stitt and junior wing Matt Hoalcraft. In the final seconds of the half Colgate attempted to kick the ball out of bounds to end the half but Angus Bishop blocked the kick. Senior flyhalf Raf Stitt caught the ball and dished it to Matt Hoalcraft who ran it 20 meters for the score. Jack Faure hit the conversion to put the Hammerheads up 20-13 going into the half.

 

Colgate came out firing on offense and scored a try in the 42nd minute and a penalty conversion in the 45thminute to take the lead at 21-20. Hooker Vince Morales ran the ball in for his 2nd score of the day to regain the lead and Faure hit the conversion to make it 27-21.

 

In the 60th minute, junior lock Jack Faure hit a penalty conversion from the sideline to make it 30-21. Senior scrumhalf Pat Soloviev put the game away with a score off a scrum in the 81st minute. Faure hit the conversion to make it 37-21

 

Faure and Morales both had 10 points to lead the Orange. Jack was 2/2 on penalty conversions and 3/5 on try conversions. The Hammerheads finished 4th in the Empire Rugby Conference with a 3-3 record.
